Wildlife Sketches by David Dancey-Wood

David is one of the leading pencil artists in the United Kingdom, specialising mainly in wildlife subject
matter. He was born in Bristol and studied at the Bournemouth and Poole Faculty of Art and Design for
four years before launching into a career to develop his own unique artistic talents, alongside raising
awareness of conservation issues around the planet. His interest in conservation has taken him to
many parts of the world where not only has he been able to see first hand the plight of many endangered
creatures, but he has also captured them on paper with his pencil studies.
Big Cat Pictures
Lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, leopards, and cougars are some of the most feared predators on the
face of the planet. David seems to capture the character and power of these animals, and sometimes
their more playful side, with ease. From the mesmerising stare of an african lion in his piece 'Serenity'
to the quiet contemplation of a cougar in 'Daydreamer' David depicts these majestic creatures beautifully.
Primate Pictures
It's easy to see how primates got their name, the Latin primas means 'one of the first, excellent, noble'.
The biological order Primates contains our closest animal cousins and it's amazing how human their
expressions can be, you don't have to be a zoologist to see if a chimpanzee is happy or sad. As well as
chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans David has drawn lemurs and monkeys as well as the most
advanced primate of them all, humans.
Safari Pictures
Meaning 'journey' in Swahili the word safari conjurs up romantic images of elephants, giraffes and rhinos.
Gone are the days when hunting these amazing creatures was considered acceptable, instead these
days people shoot rolls of film instead of guns. Although photographs are useful for capturing images
David Dancey Wood manages to convey the soul of these magnificent beasts with his outstanding sketches.
Other Species
There are a whole host of other wildlife sketches that David has studied and drawn. Turtles, toads,
pandas, wolfs, bears, frogs and even ants have been sketched with the attention to detail you
would expect from this reknowned wildlife artist.
