Zebra drawing by David Dancey-Wood

"The hardest part of this drawing was depicting the texture of hair on the foal in comparison to the smoother coat of the adult."

David Dancey-Wood, from his book Pencils patience and primates

Zebras are social animals that live in herds, which can range from a few individuals to several hundred. Foals are very dependent on their mothers and will stay close to them for the first few months of their lives. They will often nurse from their mother for up to a year, but they begin grazing on grass and leaves as early as two weeks after birth.

Zebras use various forms of communication, such as vocalizations and body language, to communicate with each other. Young zebras will often play with each other, chasing and nipping at each other's tails. This play is important for their social development and helps them learn important social skills that they will need as they grow older.
