David recounts, in his book, that Gordon was born at Monkey World and had never had a male role model to play with. When Tuan arrived from Taiwan this situation was temporarily over.

Tuan had been found wandering loose in Tàichung City, Taiwan. It took three days to capture him, and then he was bought to Monkey World. Tuan had been smuggled from the wild and kept as an illegal pet until he escaped.

Sadly now, Gordon is growing up and can no longer be around Tuan as he is becoming a rival mail. Male Orangutans are solitary in the wild. (Pencils, Patience and Primates).

This drawing captures that period when the young still esteem their seniors. And they love to be around each other to share and to learn. It’s a very human trait too. Ask any parent and grandparent.

So that’s why I think this picture is so appealing.
