Three references of the same animal is the working minimum: one for the pose, one that shows the head from a similar angle with better light, and one close enough to read the coat texture. Photograph at a zoo, a wildlife park or a sanctuary where you can spend an hour on one individual and come away with the light from several angles. How do you draw a big cat's head step by step?
Build the head as a box before it is a head, place the eyes low, and render the eye itself in a fixed order: darkest pupil first, catchlight reserved as untouched paper, iris striations last. The head is where a big cat drawing succeeds or fails, so give it the construction time it deserves.
Draw the skull as a three-dimensional box in 2H. Not an oval. A box, with a visible top plane, front plane and side plane, tilted to match your reference. You should see a form you could rotate in your head, with the far cheek edge implied even where it is out of sight.
Add the centre line down the face, following the curve of the box. On a three-quarter view this line bows toward the near side. You should see the centre line pass through the brow ridge, between the eyes, down the nose bridge and through the notch of the upper lip.
Place the eyes on the horizontal division roughly halfway down the head, then check against reference. On most big cats the eye line sits at or slightly below the midpoint of the total head height including the crown, which is considerably lower than a domestic cat. Set the ears according to species. A lion's ears are small, rounded and set wide and low on a broad skull. A leopard's are rounded, held higher and closer. Construct the nose leather as a solid form. The nose has a top plane, two side wings and the nostril slits cut into them, and the leather's lower edge meets the philtrum. You should see a shape with a lit top plane and a shadowed underside, not a flat black triangle.
Render each eye in order. Lay the pupil in first at 6B and make it genuinely black, leave the catchlight as bare paper from the very beginning, grade the iris from dark at the rim to lighter toward the pupil, then put in the fine radial striations last with the mechanical pencil. You should see a wet-looking eye where the darkest dark in the drawing sits inside the pupil and the whitest white sits beside it, untouched.
Add the eye rim, the tear duct and the surrounding short hair. The dark rim is not a uniform outline: it thickens at the inner corner and thins along the upper lid. You should see the eye seated in a socket with fur growing around it.
Set the whisker follicles last on the muzzle pad. Small dark pits in staggered rows, varying in size, with the whiskers themselves left as reserved paper or lifted. You should see texture that implies pores rather than a dotted grid.
The two mistakes that ruin most amateur big cat heads are a muzzle drawn too short and eyes drawn too round. Both come from muscle memory built on domestic cats. Big cat eyes are more almond-shaped, set lower, and smaller relative to the head than beginners believe, and the muzzle is longer and deeper. How do you draw big cat fur in graphite without flattening the form?
Map fur direction as its own stage before any tone goes down, then build the coat in four passes: even base tone, lift the lights, draw fur clumps, reinstate the darks. Fur that flattens a form almost always means the artist started rendering hairs before deciding where the hairs were travelling.
Fur direction mapping means drawing, very lightly in HB, a series of flow lines across the whole animal showing where the coat streams. It radiates from the muzzle, sweeps back along the cheek, changes direction at the shoulder whorl, runs down the limbs and reverses on the belly. Then the four passes, in this order:
Block the form in soft even tone. Use 2B on its side, or a tortillon, to lay a mid grey over everything except your reserved whites. You should see a grey silhouette that already reads as a three-dimensional animal with no fur in it at all. If it does not read as solid now, no amount of hair will save it.
Lift the light with a kneaded eraser. Shape the eraser to a point or a wedge and pull out the lit planes: the top of the skull, the shoulder, the rise of the hip. You should see your light source become obvious from across the room.
Draw fur clumps, not individual hairs. Real fur separates into locks and groups. Draw the shadow between clumps and let the clump itself stay as the lighter shape, with only a few individual hairs breaking the silhouette at the edges. You should see texture that survives being viewed from two metres away.
Reinstate the darks. Go back with 4B and 6B into the deepest recesses, the fold under the jaw, the inside of the ear, the shadow where a limb meets the body.
Long guard hairs and whiskers are best reserved rather than added. Either leave the paper untouched along their length as you work around them, or impress the line into the paper with an embossing tool before any graphite goes down, so the pencil skips over the groove and the hair appears as a white line automatically.

Each species presents one dominant technical problem, and identifying it before you start tells you where your hours will go. What follows are working notes rather than natural history.
Lion. The mane is a structure, not a fringe. It grows in distinct regions with different lengths and directions, and where it meets the shoulder coat there is a clear transition line that must be drawn softly rather than as an outline. Manes differ by age and population, so match your reference and do not generalise. The nose bridge is notably flat and broad, and the eyes are small on a heavy brow.
Tiger. The broadest skull of the seven, with a ruff of longer cheek fur that widens the head further. The white above the eye and around the muzzle needs reserving from the start. The stripes are your form-describing tool, so map them onto the direction lines before you tone anything.
Leopard. A long, supple body on relatively short limbs, with rosettes at their densest across the shoulders. Snow leopard. The great graphite problem: a nearly white animal in a grey medium. The answer is to lower the value key of everything around it and keep the cat's lit planes as untouched paper, so the white exists by contrast rather than by absence of work. The tail is extraordinarily thick and long, and beginners consistently draw it too thin.
Jaguar. The heaviest jaw and the widest cheekbones, on the shortest limbs. A jaguar drawn with a leopard's proportions loses all of its power, so exaggerate nothing but measure the jaw depth carefully.
Cheetah. A small head on a very deep chest and long limbs, with claws that stay visible because they do not fully retract. That detail is worth including on a standing or walking pose, because it is one of the few places a knowledgeable viewer checks.

How do you draw a big cat in any pose, including full body?
Start with a single gesture line through the spine before any contour, then build mass around it. A full-body big cat drawn contour-first will be stiff, because the outline is a consequence of the pose rather than the cause of it.
The gesture line runs from the base of the skull, along the neck and spine, and out through the tail in one continuous movement. Draw it in one stroke, fast, and if it does not feel like the animal is moving, draw it again before anything else happens.
Then the structure. In a walking big cat the shoulder blade rises visibly above the line of the back on the weight-bearing side, which is one of the most convincing details you can include. Decide early whether the drawing has a background or a vignette edge. A vignette, where the rendering fades into bare paper around the animal, keeps all the viewer's attention on the coat and is the traditional choice in graphite wildlife work. A full background competes for tonal range and doubles your hours.
Negative space is the check. Look at the shapes of paper between the limbs, between the tail and the body, between the ear and the skull. Where do big cat drawings usually go wrong?
Three failures account for most disappointing big cat drawings, and all three are recoverable if you catch them early.
The head is the wrong shape and you found out at the fur stage. Once you have spent ten hours on a coat, you will not start again, and you will live with a wrong skull forever. Prevention is the only cure: before any tone goes down, photograph your construction drawing, flip the image horizontally and compare it against a flipped reference. Errors that were invisible for an hour become obvious in five seconds.
The pattern flattened the form. If the rosettes or stripes look stuck on, squint at the drawing. If the pattern is still the loudest thing you see and the body's volume has disappeared, lift the whole patterned area back with a kneaded eraser, re-establish the light and shade of the underlying form, and put the pattern back in at reduced contrast on the shadow side.
The drawing is grey. Graphite work that never commits to a true black stays muddy no matter how detailed it is. The checklist:
Mirror test. View the drawing reversed. Symmetry and alignment errors, particularly in eye placement, appear instantly.
Squint test. Half-close your eyes until detail disappears. You should see a clear pattern of light and dark masses that reads as a three-dimensional animal.
Eye alignment. Both eyes should look at the same point, and the catchlights should be positioned consistently with a single light source.
Full value range. Darkest dark and lightest light both present, and both intentional.
Edge variety. Some edges crisp, some lost into the background. A drawing where every edge is equally sharp looks cut out.
What happens after the last mark
This is the part no tutorial covers, and it is where finished work is most often lost. Graphite does not bond to paper, it sits on it, so an unframed, unfixed drawing can smudge from a sleeve, a sheet of interleaving paper or its own storage.
Fixative is a judgement call. A light workable fixative will stop casual smudging but slightly darkens graphite and can dull the shine of the deepest darks, which some artists dislike intensely.
