The high point of the back
Look at the topline before you look at anything else. On a brown bear, the highest point of the back sits over the shoulders and drops away towards the hips; on a black bear, the line climbs steadily from the neck to a rump that is the tallest part of the standing animal. This is a skeletal and muscular difference, not a posture trick.
From the side it is obvious. From the front, the brown bear's hump reads as a broad mass rising behind the head, and from directly behind, the black bear's raised hips form a rounded double curve with the spine dipping between them.
The cue does degrade. In a shedding bear during late spring, patchy fur can flatten the hump visually; in deep snow, the hindquarters disappear and you lose the comparison entirely. Wet fur actually helps here, because it clings and shows the muscle shape more honestly than dry winter coat.
Verdict: the topline is the first cue to test and the best cue at long range, but distrust it on a shedding bear in poor light and move to the face.
Facial profile in silhouette
Turn the animal into an outline in your head and read the line from the brow to the tip of the nose. A brown bear's is concave, a shallow scoop caused by a heavy brow ridge and a broad, deep muzzle; a black bear's is essentially straight, sometimes even faintly convex, giving a longer and more dog-like look.
This is the cue that works best in profile and worst head-on, which is the inverse of the ear test. In full face, the brown bear's muzzle looks wide and blunt against a broad cranium, while the black bear's looks narrow and tapered.

Ears
Ear proportion is judged against skull width, not against absolute size. Behaviour and habitat: what each bear does with its body
Anatomy predicts behaviour, and behaviour is often visible before detail is. Brown bears dig, hold ground and excavate; black bears climb, and will use a tree as an escape route at an age when a large brown bear has long since lost that option.
The shoulder hump is a digging engine. It is the muscle mass that drives the forelimbs downward through frozen ground, hillside root systems and rodent burrows, and the same architecture makes a brown bear inclined to stand its ground rather than flee when it feels crowded.
