Do polar bears hibernate? The short answer

Polar bears do not hibernate. Only pregnant females enter a prolonged winter denning state, and even that is not classical hibernation but a fasting dormancy from which the bear can rouse, give birth and nurse.

Every other polar bear, males, juveniles and females without cubs, stays awake and hunting through the Arctic winter. That is the part most summaries leave out, and it inverts the intuition people carry over from black and brown bears, whose winters really are spent underground.

What hibernation actually means, and why the word breaks down here

True hibernation is a seasonal state of suppressed metabolism in which body temperature falls substantially, heart rate and breathing slow dramatically, and the animal becomes difficult to rouse. Torpor is the shorter, shallower version of the same trick. Denning is neither: it is a behaviour, a period spent in a shelter, which may or may not involve deep metabolic suppression.

The confusion comes from the fact that bears in general do something genuinely remarkable that sits between these categories. A denning bear fasts for months without drinking, urinating or defecating, recycling urea into protein rather than excreting it, and loses far less muscle than a starving animal should. That metabolic signature, not the sleeping, is what people are really gesturing at when they say hibernation.

Pregnant polar bears share much of that physiology. What they do not share is the trigger. Their dormancy is tied to pregnancy and to the food available in a given year rather than to winter as such, which is why the same population can produce a denning female and, fifty miles away, a male walking the pressure ridges in February with no interest in sleeping at all.

The 'walking hibernation' question

For a long time researchers described fasting summer polar bears as being in a state of "walking hibernation": active, but with metabolism dialled down in a way that resembled a denning bear. The idea was attractive because it explained how a bear could go months without a seal and still walk.

More recent work has pushed back on it, finding that fasting active bears look closer to any large mammal going hungry than to a hibernating one. This is a live scientific argument rather than a settled correction, and it is worth stating as such. What is not contested is that polar bears, as a species, do not shut down for the winter.

Why do polar bears not hibernate in winter?

Polar bears stay active in winter because winter is when the food arrives. Sea ice re-forms, ringed and bearded seals become reachable at breathing holes and in birth lairs, and the coldest, darkest months of the year are the most productive hunting of the bear's calendar.

Brown bears in temperate and subarctic ranges face winters in which berries, roots, salmon and carrion all disappear at once, so dormancy is the rational answer. The polar bear's ancestors walked north into an environment where the calendar runs the other way, and the denning habit stayed only where it still paid: in pregnant females that need a warm, stable place to give birth. Do polar bears hibernate in summer instead?

No, but summer is the season that most resembles hibernation in its effects. For many populations the ice retreats, seals become unreachable, and bears come ashore to wait, living off fat while doing as little as possible.

Polar Bears International's page on summer behaviour, read on 17 September 2026, is careful to say that there is no single summer strategy: what a bear does depends on its ecoregion. It describes different patterns across the North American High Arctic, Arctic Norway, Russia and Alaska, and the Central and Eastern Canadian Arctic, where ice conditions and coastline shape entirely different summers for bears of the same species.

The reason summer fasting is not hibernation is simple and worth stating plainly: the bear is awake. It moves, swims, investigates, scavenges, defends space and responds to its surroundings at normal body temperature. A fasting bear conserving energy on a gravel beach in August is doing something behaviourally ordinary and physiologically hard, not something metabolically exotic.

That distinction matters for anyone drawing the animal, because a summer shore bear and a winter ice bear are almost different creatures in silhouette. One is lean, loose-coated, often yellowed and stained; the other is dense, deep-chested and clean.

Do pregnant polar bears hibernate, and for how long?

A pregnant polar bear enters a snow or earth den in autumn, gives birth in the depth of winter, and emerges with cubs in spring, typically spending somewhere in the region of five to six months inside, with real variation by population and by year.

The sequence starts earlier than the den does. Polar bears use delayed implantation: mating happens in spring, but the fertilised egg does not implant until autumn, and then only if the female has built enough fat to carry a pregnancy and a lactation through a winter fast. A poor ice year can end a pregnancy before the den is ever dug.

Once inside, the physiology takes over. Cubs are born mid-winter, tiny, blind and almost hairless, at a fraction of a percentage of their mother's weight, and she nurses them in the dark on nothing but her own reserves. Published figures for den entry, birth and emergence dates differ between the Beaufort Sea, Hudson Bay, Svalbard and the Russian Arctic, so any single date you see quoted is a population average rather than a species fact.

What everyone else is doing

Males and non-pregnant females do not den for the winter at all. They are on the ice, and by late winter they are in the best condition of their year.

There is one small exception that gets mistaken for hibernation. Bears of any sex will dig a temporary shelter pit and lie up for a day or several during a severe storm, letting drifting snow cover them. That is weather behaviour, closer to what a sled dog does, and it has nothing to do with the metabolic state of a maternity den.

Do polar bears hibernate in captivity?

Polar bears in temperate zoos generally remain active all year, because the conditions that produce denning are absent. Food is constant, so the seasonal fast never arrives, and the fast is the cue that matters more than the cold.

This is the most useful natural experiment available for understanding the question. If hibernation were driven primarily by temperature, a polar bear in a mild-winter enclosure would be the least likely animal on earth to sleep through the season. Instead, what disappears is the hunger, and with it the dormancy.

It is worth being honest about the limits here. Individual institutions manage their bears differently, pregnant captive females may be given quiet denning space, and practice is not something I can verify from a distance for any particular collection. The general principle, that dormancy tracks food scarcity rather than thermometer readings, is sound; the specifics vary and are best asked of the keepers themselves.

What a denning bear looks like: the seasonal body an artist has to get right

The single hardest thing about drawing a polar bear accurately is that its body is a different shape in October than it is in April, and most reference photographs do not tell you which month you are looking at. Seasonal condition is the detail that separates a studied drawing from a competent copy.

Picture one female twice. In late October, before she digs in, she is carrying the fat that will fund roughly five months of fasting plus the birth and nursing of cubs: the belly line runs low and nearly parallel to the ground, the flank has no visible tuck, the shoulders and hips blur into one continuous mass, and the neck reads short because the ruff behind it is thick. Her coat is at its best, dense, with long guard hairs that catch light in a soft halo at the edge of the body.

The same bear in late March, standing outside the den with two cubs, is a different drawing problem. She has fasted through the winter and nursed two cubs on her reserves, so the flank tucks visibly up behind the ribs, the shoulder blade and hip bone start to articulate under the coat, the spine reads as a line rather than a roll, and the head looks larger relative to the body because the body has shrunk around it. Her coat is dull and often stained tea-brown or grey where she has lain against earth and her own den.

The cubs beside her are not small adults. They have short muzzles, round crania, proportionally enormous paws, and a spindly-legged uncertainty in the stance that disappears within a season. Getting the head-to-body ratio wrong here is the most common tell in amateur polar bear work.

Why graphite suits an animal that has no colour

Polar bear fur is not white. Each guard hair is a hollow, translucent tube with no white pigment in it, and the animal reads white because of how that structure scatters light. Underneath, the skin is black, and it shows through most clearly at the nose, the lips and the rim of the eye.

That makes the polar bear an unusually honest subject for pencil. A graphite drawing of a white animal is built almost entirely from the paper itself: the artist works out the darks, the wet shine on the nose, the shadow inside the ear, the cold grey in the shaded flank, and lets untouched paper do the work of the light. Colour would add almost nothing, because the animal's whiteness is structural rather than pigmented.

The craft question is whether the artist has drawn translucency or drawn a white shape. Common myths about polar bear hibernation, corrected

  • Polar bears den in caves. Most maternity dens are excavated in snowdrifts, though earth dens in permafrost banks are used in some regions; a cave is the wrong image entirely.

  • Polar bears are white. The fur is unpigmented and translucent and the skin beneath it is black, which is why coats yellow with age and stain brown in a den.

  • Male bears help raise the cubs. They do not; females raise cubs alone, and adult males are a genuine danger to cubs.

Collecting polar bear art: what to look for in a drawing

The most reliable quality signal in a polar bear drawing is seasonal coherence: the fat load, coat condition and setting should all describe the same month. A February hunting bear with a spring-emergent's tucked flank, or a heavy autumn body with a den-stained coat, tells you the artist assembled the animal from unrelated photographs.

The second thing to ask about is reference. A drawing worth owning comes from an artist who has looked hard at a specific animal in specific conditions, not from a stock image traced for its pose. Has a grizzly ever mated with a polar bear?

Yes. Hybrids between polar bears and grizzlies have been confirmed in the wild in the Canadian Arctic, and the two species have also produced offspring in captivity. The animals are close enough genetically to interbreed and produce fertile young, which reflects how recently the polar bear diverged from brown bear ancestry. Wild hybrids remain rare and are documented as individual cases rather than as a population.

Can you wake up a hibernating bear?

Yes, and that is one of the key differences between bear dormancy and true hibernation in small mammals. A bear's body temperature drops only modestly, and it can rouse within minutes if disturbed. Waking a denning bear is a serious hazard to the animal as well as the person: a female forced out of a maternity den in mid-winter may abandon cubs she cannot re-shelter.

How long do polar bears stay in their dens?
